Sparkling Silver

This post is for all you southern ladies who have a SILVER COLLECTION. When I was a bride back in 2006, I remember being so excited when I received sterling silver wedding gifts: trays, pitchers, and of course my sterling silver flatware. It didn’t matter to me that it would be difficult to keep polished. I felt elegant, grown-up, and ready to entertain.

This post is also for you ladies who love SILVER JEWELRY. A few summers ago, I had my “colors done” and was told that silver looks better on my skin tone than gold. Since then I’m always looking out for pretty silver jewelry because until then I mostly wore gold.

I don’t remember where I heard about Tarn-X, but in the past year I heard about it and ordered it and it has been sitting in my cabinet ever since. Well, today I went to the thrift store (you can read about my thrifting adventures HERE) and I found a sterling silver necklace. It was sweet but very tarnished, and as soon as I got home, I decided to get out the Tarn-X and see how well it works. Friends, I was amazed!

Both the chain and the little silver disks were very tarnished so I got a little bowl of Tarn-X and let the necklace soak for 60 seconds. (On the bottle, it says not to submerge anything for longer than 2 minutes. It also says to wear gloves, so I did.) After I let it soak, I sat it across a clean cloth and went to work with a Q-tip scrubbing the individual disks for any leftover tarnish. Most of it was already gone, though. It was so easy. Look how good the necklace looks now!

After I finished with my necklace, I decided to see how well it worked on a piece of my really tarnished sterling silver. Friends, again I was astonished. The tarnish literally just wiped off. It was so much easier than using that silver polishing cream. And much less messy, too. I poured a little of the Tarn-X on a microfiber cloth, wiped it over the tarnish, and that was all. The tarnish was gone. After you’re finished wiping away all the tarnish, just wash with soap and water and it’s ready to go. You can see my video on Instagram and you too will be amazed!

Look how beautiful it looks now that it’s all polished!

So then, I decided to test it on these little glass cups that are embossed with my sorority crest. (Another thrift store find for $2.99/each.) They began full of tarnish and finished ✨sparkly!✨

I went to the antique mall last weekend because I decided I need a little bowl to put on my nightstand to hold jewelry and whatever else I need to discard for the night. I found a beautiful silver pedestal bowl, and then remembered I actually have one similar. Don’t you love it when that happens? So, I pulled out the bowl, saw it was tarnished, and pulled out the Tarn-X. You can guess what the results were.

Years ago I purchased a beautiful antique biscuit tin from Jean Williams—for those of you old school McKinney peeps, you know Jean owned the most beautiful antique store on the Square for years and years! She also happened to be a KKG which was an extra-fun tie. Anyway, I love this biscuit tin, but rarely use it and it had become sooo tarnished. Enter Tarn-X.

Almond Butter Pretzels anyone?

And what does any of this have to do with living beautifully? Well, maybe it’s just a reminder to all of us to take care of our beautiful things. Be a good steward. Use your gifts to bless others. I feel like so many of us have so much stuff. If you’re going to have it, why not use it? Why not serve ice water in a sterling pitcher when a friend stops by? Or use your sterling bowl to hold jewelry on your nightstand?

With the fall season among us (more in month rather than in temperature) we typically do more entertaining. If you’re planning a soirè with girlfriends, are hosting a supper club, or will have your family over for seasonal celebrations, consider using your special serving pieces and grab some Tarn-X to make them sparkle.
