live like you’re on vacation!
Last week, BP and I went to Puerta Vallarta for a few days to celebrate our 43rd birthdays and I kept thinking about adopting some things I experienced in PV into my everyday life. Honestly, any time I’m out of town, I often notice special things that I wish were part of my everyday. So why can’t they be? Here are the things I picked up in Puerta Vallarta.
Here is a list of 5 things on vacation I have/want to adopt into my everyday life.
1.) Step up my toiletry game
While in Puerta Vallarta, I loved seeing the beautiful bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in our shower each morning. One, I love that they weren’t disposable tiny bottles, but full size toiletries that can be refilled; but two, it felt luxurious to have products that smelled so beautiful, and in pretty bottles. I have a pretty low-maintenance shower routine at home and don’t want to add a bunch of “stuff,” but do love the thought of picking up some great smelling products every once in a while. It’s also good to use this opportunity to do an empty bottle clean out. Won’t it feel so good to clean up that shower shelf and fill it with great smelling products in beautiful bottles? Should I do a body care/haircare/skincare post sometime soon? Is that kind of stuff interesting to you? LMK in the comments.
2.) The white robe
I am a robe person, friends, and have two in my arsenol that I use regularly. It’s difficult for me to go from warm covers to full on air conditioner in the morning, which makes the robe a nice buffer. But why is a white, cotton hotel robe sooooo nice? I feel so pristine. I feel so clean, especially right out of the shower. Traveling makes me want to invest in a nice white robe for myself, and put one in our guest room!
I have not yet tried this robe out of cheapness, but Annie Meyers-Shyer suggests this one. She says “trust me” so I’m inclined to go with it. I also love that it comes in all different color combinations.
3.) Normalize keeping large plates of fruit in the fridge for all day snacking
For whatever reason, fresh fruit seems to be more readily available on vacation. And not just “easy” fruit like apples and bananas that are normal at our house, but more labor-intensive fruit like kiwi and mango. Fresh fruit is delicious at breakfast and for snacks during the day, plus it gives us essential nutrients. For example, kiwi is an immune booster and helps regulate blood pressure because of it’s potassium content.
The 2 keys to keeping fresh fruit readily available in your home are simple: 1.) Buy it. I am a frequenter of the McKinney Farmer’s Market and Trader Joes. 2.) Take less than an hour to cut it up and add it to a serving bowl. That’s it!
4.) Less makeup
I can see my Aunt Mary Martha rolling her eyes and saying, “Well you’re young, you don’t need makeup!” were she to hear this, so if you are a “I don’t go anywhere without makeup” kinda gal, then you can skip this idea. Or, visit my French Girl Makeup blog post to see what I wear normally. However, if you aren’t opposed to shedding a bit of the cosmetics, I’ll tell you it’s pretty freeing on vacation. I typically wear less makeup on vacation because of:
laziness. I just don’t want to put it on.
tan skin. If I’m on vacay in the summer and getting a tan, I think we look a little healthier therefore not needing as much makeup. NOTE: If you’re looking for a good self-tanner for your face, I love this serum from Typology.
sweaty. Sometimes it’s just not worth the effort if you’re going to sweat it off in a few minutes anyway.
5. Fancy toilet paper
Okay bare with me here, but I kind of love coming back to the room and seeing toilet paper or towels folded fancy. Right? I don’t know, part of me thinks it would be kind of fun and funny to fold the toilet paper fancy in the guest room or the boys’ bathroom while they’re at school and watch for their reactions. Listen, our world is tough. I think we need to find joy where we can find it, and if that means folding your toilet paper fancy, then let’s not be timid.
Okay, so that’s what I’ve got. 5 little ways to live like we’re still on vacation. What are your thoughts? Do you ever adopt little vacation experiences into your everyday? Pleeeaaase share with us if you do!
