How to create an outrageously luxurious guest room

Dear Lovely,

With the holiday season ahead, I know a lot of us are preparing to have house guests. I imagine anyone reading this blog is perfectly capable of graciously hosting friends or family during the holiday season. Today, however, I am going to give you some ideas on how to create the most outrageously lavish guest room ever. Take one idea. Take them all. Take none. Either way, this is a really fun post and you might get some ideas for your own guestrooms, or even see some things you could use for gifts. Again, remember that these are outrageously lavish suggestions. You are a fabulous hostess regardless.

And honestly, only a few things are truly outrageous…😉

Bedding

In an outrageously lavish guest room, the bedding of course is fabulous. These sheets are so comfortable and soft, especially for the price point. They have that wonderful coolness to the touch that we all crave when one foot strays in the night looking for a cool spot. This chunky knit bed throw is pretty to lay at the foot of the bed, and it’s easy for your guest to pull up over their lap if they lay down for a cozy afternoon nap. We have two at our home and use them constantly.

Several options of pillows are always appreciated. We have a linen closet directly outside of our guestroom where we store extras, but you can also store them in the guest room closet, just like at a hotel. These are my personal favorite pillows because they are soft and firm at the same time. These pillows are specifically made for “hot sleepers.” You can even adjust the firmness by,

opening the zipper to add or remove the cooling-infused fill until the height and firmness match your sleep position perfectly. The fill absorbs and releases heat as needed to help maintain a steady body temperature and prevent overheating through the night.

The Nightstand/Shelving

The nightstand can be a really fun area of the guest room to leave lots of surprises. Shelving or a bureau is another place to leave luxurious commodities for your guests, such a fabulous coffee maker. How fun to provide a little coffee bar for your guest so they can have a delicious cup at their leisure. If you have room for a tiny fridge, you could stock it with different creamers as well as other drinks.

  • phone charger with adapters (good guy stocking stuffer)

    • it’s nice to leave an adapter kit in the nightstand drawer in case the charger you provided doesn’t work with their cell phone

  • lavender weighted eye mask (great stocking stuffer, too!)

  • water

  • coaster

  • reading lamp

  • flower arrangement

    • Remember this beautiful vase I showed you in my gift guide? It’s so easy to arrange hydrangeas in it.

  • picture frame with WiFi network and password

  • a little dish of pre-wrapped candy

  • lovely hand cream (Caudalie is a favorite) (great stocking stuffer, too!)

  • fancy coffee maker

  • tiny fridge

Leaving a copy of your favorite magazine is a nice touch. So it gifting a signed copy of a book by a local author! The France Dance is the perfect option—and I’m happy to sign your copies if needed. Just send me an email.

The Bathroom

Beautiful toiletries feel like such a treat when you’re a guest at someone’s home.

In the shower, leave a nice shampoo & conditioner. Many women bring their own hair products, but this is a lavish guest room, so we will be leaving some. My suggestion is to stock the shower with whatever is YOUR favorite shampoo and conditioner. That way you have an extra set when they leave.

For your friends who love real luxury, Dyptique is my favorite toiletry brand and I love the Sens scent for the bath gel and lotion. For friends who prefer really clean ingredients, Primally Pure is my favorite brand. Eucalyptus + Lavender is my favorite scent. They make a gorgeous bath gel and body butter. Also from Primally Pure is this invigorating Coffee Body Scrub. Wonderful ingredients. Wonderful fragrance! Wrist towels are another little luxury to leave for your guest. They keep water from running down your arms (soaking your sleeves) when washing your face.

I think it’s also nice to leave a nice little skincare product or two. Obviously, most women will bring their own favorites, but providing something new for them to try is a thoughtful gesture. I would recommend leaving a bottle of Lavender Anti-Aging Serum from Fields of Fidelis. If you are local, you can purchase at the McKinney Farmer’s Market. It smells wonderful, is organic, and leaves your skin so soft. I also enjoy using the Rhode Caffeine Mask. It helps with puffiness which guests who’ve been traveling a long way will appreciate.

And for a fun little surprise in the shower, why not hang a bunch of eucalyptus and some dried oranges from the shower head for a lovely spa experience. This is so easy to do, friends. All you need is a bunch of eucalyptus and some dried oranges—I get mine at Trader Joe’s, along with some twine. Roll the stems with a rolling pin to release the oils, then tie with twine and connect a few of the orange slices with additional twine. Make a loop long enough to hang from the shower head. This gives a beautiful fragrance when the shower gets steamy.

The Closet

Make the closet their own little dressing room by providing a luggage rack, hangers for him and beautiful hangers for her, a full length mirror, and a fabulous robe. You’ve heard me talk about this robe before on my Christmas Gift Guide—it’s the one provided to guests at the Ritz Carlton and it is butter soft and uber comfy. The full length mirror I linked is so functional because it comes with stand, can hang over the back of a door, or can simply lean against the wall.

Things that cost little to no money:

  • leave a little tote bag hanging on their door nob for them to use on shopping days, for errands, or to help bring things home

  • it never hurts to leave an extra toothbrush, contact solution, deoderant, hairspray in the bathroom drawer

  • a little basket of snacks

  • black wash cloths for makeup removal

What do you think? Are you up for creating an uber luxurious guest room? How about a partially uber luxurious one? When I get the opportunity to stay the night away from home, it feels so good when my hostess has made my room especially cozy and special. It’s just an added way to say “I love you.”
